Historic Buildings and Sites in Sabah — The Complete Visitor Guide

Last updated: 2026-04-03

How many historic sites can I visit in Sabah?

Sabah has 16 verified historic buildings and heritage sites that are open to visitors. They range from free colonial monuments you can walk to in five minutes to purpose-built museums with multi-floor galleries. Most are spread across three main areas: Kota Kinabalu (6 sites), Sandakan (4 sites), and the Interior Division (4 sites), with two more in East Sabah and Kudat.

Entry is free at the majority of sites. Paid sites include the Sabah State Museum (RM15 for foreign visitors), Agnes Keith House (RM15), Gomantong Caves (RM30), the North Borneo Railway heritage steam train (RM80), and Kundasang War Memorial (RM10). Budget visitors can cover the main KK heritage trail entirely for free.

The sites span several eras: pre-colonial Chinese trade routes, the British North Borneo Chartered Company era (1881-1941), Japanese occupation (1942-1945), and the post-independence modern period. Together they tell the full arc of Sabah's history from colonial port to Malaysian state.

Sandakan historic sites

Sandakan's heritage sites are concentrated in and around the town centre. Agnes Keith House, St. Michael's Church, and Sam Sim Kung Temple are within a few kilometres of each other. The Sandakan Memorial Park is 8km from town — take a taxi or Grab. Budget a full day for the complete Sandakan heritage trail.

ℹ️ Info
Sandakan was Sabah's capital under British colonial rule and has the highest concentration of WWII history in the state. It was almost entirely destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944-1945 — the few buildings that survived are all the more significant.

Interior Sabah historic sites

The Interior Division requires a hire car or tour — public transport options are limited. Keningau and Tambunan are 90-120 minutes from KK by road. Kundasang is on the way to Mount Kinabalu, making it easy to combine with a mountain visit. The Keningau Oath Stone and Muzium Warisan Keningau are 5 minutes apart in Keningau town.

East Coast and Kudat historic sites

Gomantong Caves in Kinabatangan is most efficiently visited as part of a Kinabatangan River wildlife tour — most tour operators include it as a morning or afternoon stop. Fort Cowie in Kudat pairs naturally with the Tip of Borneo (Tanjung Simpang Mengayau) for a day trip to Sabah's northernmost point.

How to plan a Sabah heritage trail

A complete Sabah heritage trail covering all 16 sites realistically takes 4-5 days. Here is a suggested route that minimises backtracking and pairs sites efficiently by geography.

Day Base Sites Drive Time
Day 1 Kota Kinabalu Atkinson Clock Tower, Padang Merdeka, STB Building, Jesselton Hotel, Sabah State Museum Walkable + short Grab
Day 2 KK / Kundasang North Borneo Railway (Beaufort-Tenom, book ahead), or Kundasang War Memorial en route to Ranau 2-3 hrs from KK
Day 3 Interior (Keningau/Tambunan) Keningau Oath Stone, Muzium Warisan Keningau, Mat Salleh Memorial Monument (Tambunan) 90-120 mins from KK
Day 4 Sandakan Agnes Keith House, Sandakan Memorial Park, St. Michael's Church, Sam Sim Kung Temple 370km from KK or fly
Day 5 Kinabatangan / Kudat Gomantong Caves (East) or Fort Cowie + Tip of Borneo (Kudat) Varies by route
💡 Tip
Flying between KK and Sandakan (45 minutes, from RM60) is far more practical than driving 370km by road. Most Sandakan visitors fly in and out, then hire a car for local sites.

Frequently asked questions

Q Which Sabah historic site is most worth visiting?
The Kundasang War Memorial stands out for the combination of historical gravity and natural beauty — the memorial gardens sit directly below Mount Kinabalu, making it both moving and spectacular. For purely historical depth, the Sandakan Memorial Park marks the original POW camp site and is essential for anyone interested in WWII history. In Kota Kinabalu, the Atkinson Clock Tower is the most photographed heritage landmark and is free to visit 24 hours a day.
Q Are most historic sites in Sabah free to visit?
Most outdoor memorials and colonial structures are free. The Atkinson Clock Tower, Padang Merdeka, Keningau Oath Stone, Fort Cowie, Mat Salleh Memorial Monument, and Sandakan Memorial Park all have free entry. The main paid sites are the Sabah State Museum (RM15 for foreigners), Gomantong Caves (RM30), Agnes Keith House (RM15), and the North Borneo Railway heritage steam train (RM80). The Jesselton Hotel charges hotel rates but the lobby and street frontage are accessible without charge.
Q Can I do a Sabah heritage trail in one day?
A single-day heritage trail is possible within one city. The Kota Kinabalu heritage trail (Atkinson Clock Tower, Padang Merdeka, Sabah Tourism Board Building, Sabah State Museum, Jesselton Hotel) can be done in half a day. The Sandakan heritage trail (Agnes Keith House, Sandakan Memorial Park, St. Michael's Church, Sam Sim Kung Temple) takes a full day. Combining KK and Sandakan requires at least two days — they are 370km apart by road or 45 minutes by flight.
Q What is the oldest building still standing in Sabah?
The Atkinson Clock Tower in Kota Kinabalu, completed in 1905, is the oldest surviving colonial building in the capital. In Sandakan, St. Michael's Church (1893) and Sam Sim Kung Temple (late 1800s) are among the oldest surviving structures in Sabah overall. Much of Sabah's pre-war architecture was destroyed during Allied bombing in 1944-1945 to deny the Japanese forces its use, which is why so few colonial-era buildings survive.
Q Are historic sites in Sabah accessible by public transport?
Accessibility varies significantly. Kota Kinabalu heritage sites are walkable from each other or a short Grab ride away. Agnes Keith House and St. Michael's Church in Sandakan are accessible by taxi from the city. The Kundasang War Memorial requires a hire car or tour. Gomantong Caves and the North Borneo Railway (Beaufort-Tenom stretch) almost always require private transport or a tour booking. The Keningau Oath Stone and Muzium Warisan Keningau require driving to Keningau town.
