Historic Buildings and Sites in Sabah — The Complete Visitor Guide
How many historic sites can I visit in Sabah?
Sabah has 16 verified historic buildings and heritage sites that are open to visitors. They range from free colonial monuments you can walk to in five minutes to purpose-built museums with multi-floor galleries. Most are spread across three main areas: Kota Kinabalu (6 sites), Sandakan (4 sites), and the Interior Division (4 sites), with two more in East Sabah and Kudat.
Entry is free at the majority of sites. Paid sites include the Sabah State Museum (RM15 for foreign visitors), Agnes Keith House (RM15), Gomantong Caves (RM30), the North Borneo Railway heritage steam train (RM80), and Kundasang War Memorial (RM10). Budget visitors can cover the main KK heritage trail entirely for free.
The sites span several eras: pre-colonial Chinese trade routes, the British North Borneo Chartered Company era (1881-1941), Japanese occupation (1942-1945), and the post-independence modern period. Together they tell the full arc of Sabah's history from colonial port to Malaysian state.

Kota Kinabalu historic sites
KK's heritage sites are compact and walkable. The Atkinson Clock Tower, Padang Merdeka, and Sabah Tourism Board Building form a tight cluster in the city centre. The Sabah State Museum is a 10-minute drive away. Plan half a day for the city centre cluster and add the museum for a full day.
KK's oldest building (1905). The red-brick memorial clock tower on Signal Hill, free to visit any time. A 5-minute walk from the Waterfront Esplanade.
Four-floor museum covering natural history, indigenous cultures, ceramics, and colonial heritage. The Heritage Village outdoor section adds another hour.

KK's historic open field and event ground. Venue for Malaysia Day, Kaamatan, and Sabah Day ceremonies since colonial times. Adjacent to the Atkinson Clock Tower.
KK's oldest operating hotel since 1954, named after the colonial capital. Colonial boutique atmosphere on the heritage Jalan Gaya shophouse street.
134km colonial railway through the dramatic Padas Gorge. The vintage steam train run from Beaufort to Tenom is one of Sabah's best heritage experiences.
Sandakan historic sites
Sandakan's heritage sites are concentrated in and around the town centre. Agnes Keith House, St. Michael's Church, and Sam Sim Kung Temple are within a few kilometres of each other. The Sandakan Memorial Park is 8km from town — take a taxi or Grab. Budget a full day for the complete Sandakan heritage trail.
Restored colonial house of WWII memoirist Agnes Keith, author of 'Land Below the Wind'. Now a museum with period furniture and Keith's personal artefacts.
The site of the original WWII Allied POW camp where the Sandakan Death Marches began. A peaceful garden memorial with interpretive displays and Anzac Day ceremonies.
The 1893 sandstone Anglican church — the oldest surviving colonial building in Sandakan. Gothic arched windows and a bell tower, still an active parish church.
One of Sandakan's oldest Chinese Taoist temples, with roots in the late 1800s. Survived Allied bombing, still active. Red lanterns, incense, ornate carved eaves.
Interior Sabah historic sites
The Interior Division requires a hire car or tour — public transport options are limited. Keningau and Tambunan are 90-120 minutes from KK by road. Kundasang is on the way to Mount Kinabalu, making it easy to combine with a mountain visit. The Keningau Oath Stone and Muzium Warisan Keningau are 5 minutes apart in Keningau town.
Four memorial gardens honouring the WWII fallen, set directly against Mount Kinabalu. One of Sabah's most moving and beautiful heritage sites.
The Batu Sumpah — where Sabah's leaders took an oath supporting Malaysia's formation in 1963. A symbol of Sabah's consent and MA63 political history.
Interior Sabah's heritage museum — Murut blowpipe collections, Kadazan-Dusun textiles, and Chinese settler history. Best Murut artefact collection outside KK.
The granite monument honouring Mat Salleh, Sabah's greatest indigenous resistance hero. Set against a dramatic Crocker Range backdrop in Tambunan.
East Coast and Kudat historic sites
Gomantong Caves in Kinabatangan is most efficiently visited as part of a Kinabatangan River wildlife tour — most tour operators include it as a morning or afternoon stop. Fort Cowie in Kudat pairs naturally with the Tip of Borneo (Tanjung Simpang Mengayau) for a day trip to Sabah's northernmost point.
Sabah's largest limestone cave system. A boardwalk through the main cave (Simud Hitam) passes millions of bats and a centuries-old bird nest harvesting tradition.
Remnants of the BNCC's first colonial fortification, built in 1881-1883 when Kudat was Sabah's capital. Named after BNCC co-founder William Cowie.
