Kota Kinabalu City Guide — What to See & Do

Last updated: Invalid Date

📐 Area 351 km²
🚗 From KK
Known for State capital

Kota Kinabalu — universally known as KK — is the capital of Sabah and the main gateway to Malaysian Borneo. It's where most visitors first arrive, and where many Sabahans come for work, shopping, and entertainment.

The city sits along the South China Sea, with Mount Kinabalu visible on clear days. It's a compact, walkable city centre with a mix of modern malls, busy wet markets, and waterfront restaurants.

Things to Do

KK punches above its weight for a city its size. Here's what's worth your time:

  • Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park — 5 islands just 15 min by speedboat from Jesselton Point. Snorkelling, beach, island hopping.
  • KK Waterfront — Evening food stalls, sunset views, weekend markets.
  • Signal Hill Observatory — Best free viewpoint in KK. Quick walk up, panoramic city + sea views.
  • Gaya Street Sunday Market — Every Sunday morning. Plants, pets, local food, handicrafts.
  • Filipino Market — Handicrafts, pearls, souvenirs. Bargain hard.
  • Sabah State Museum — History, ethnography, natural history. Small but informative.
💡 Sunset tip

Head to the waterfront or Signal Hill around 5:30-6:00 PM for Sabah's famous sunsets. KK faces west, so sunsets over the South China Sea are spectacular.

Where to Eat

KK is the food capital of Sabah. Key areas for eating:

  • Gaya Street — kopitiam culture, ngiu chap, local breakfast spots
  • Sedco Square — Malay and Filipino food, open-air evening market
  • Night Market (Waterfront) — Grilled seafood, BBQ chicken wings, satay
  • Grace Point / Damai area — Korean, Japanese, Western restaurants
  • Tanjung Aru — Beachside food stalls, sunset dining

Getting Around

KK's city centre is walkable. Beyond that:

  • Grab — Works reliably within KK city. Most rides RM5-15.
  • Bus — City buses run set routes but are infrequent. Not tourist-friendly.
  • Car rental — Best option for exploring outside KK. From ~RM80/day.
  • Airport shuttle — RM5 bus from terminal, or Grab ~RM15-20.

Accommodation

KK has options for every budget:

Budget Area Price Range
Budget Gaya Street / City centre hostels RM30-80/night
Mid-range City centre / Imago area RM150-350/night
Upscale Waterfront / Sutera Harbour / Shangri-La RM400-1200/night
