Diving in Sabah — Sipadan, Mabul & Best Dive Sites

Last updated: 2026-03-10

Sipadan

Malaysia's only oceanic island, rising 600m from the seabed — an extinct volcanic cone in the Celebes Sea. Consistently ranked among the world's top 5 dive sites. Over 400 fish species, hundreds of coral species, and 12 dive sites.

The famous Barracuda Tornado features thousands of chevron barracuda forming spiraling columns — best on morning dives. Expect 20+ turtles (green and hawksbill) per dive, year-round. The Turtle Tomb is a submerged cave at ~20m containing turtle skeletons. Wall diving at Barracuda Point, White Tip Avenue, Turtle Patch, and Hanging Gardens offers 20-30m visibility.

Permits: 176-254/day, MYR450/day/diver (allows 2 dives). Advanced Open Water minimum since October 2022. Book through 24 licensed operators, 6 months ahead, 50% deposit. 3-5 night minimum stay for guarantee. Closed November for marine restoration. Best visibility: March-May (20-30m). Water temp: 27-30°C.

Other Dive Sites

Deep-sea atoll rising from 2,000m depths. Famous for hammerhead shark encounters March-May. Visibility 20-40m+. Remote and exclusive — for serious divers.

Q Do I need Advanced Open Water for Sipadan?
Yes. Since October 2022, PADI Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) is the minimum certification required to dive Sipadan. The 30m depth limit and strong currents make this essential. You can get certified in Sabah — PADI AOW costs about MYR1,150 base, with a MYR300 single traveler surcharge.
Q How do I get a Sipadan permit?
Book through one of the 24 licensed operators (each gets ~6 permits/day). Reserve 6 months ahead with 50% deposit, full payment 2 weeks before. A 3-5 night stay at a nearby island (Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking) is typically required for permit guarantee. Maximum 2 dives per person per day at Sipadan.
Q What marine life can I see by month?
Whale sharks: March-May at Lankayan (best April-May). Hammerhead sharks: March-May at Layang-Layang. Manta rays: October-April peak. Barracuda tornado at Sipadan: best morning dives, most active March-May and July-August. Turtles: year-round at Sipadan (20+ per dive) and Lankayan.
Q Where is the best snorkeling without a dive cert?
TARP islands (15-30min from KK) offer the best accessible snorkeling from MYR40 equipment only or MYR105+ guided. Manukan and Sapi have the healthiest reefs. Mabul snorkeling trips (MYR180 all-in) and Bohey Dulang offer turtle sightings. Even Sipadan has 20 snorkeling permits per day.
