Known for Sipadan & island diving

Semporna is a small coastal town in southeast Sabah that serves as the gateway to some of the world's best diving — Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking, and the Tun Sakaran Marine Park. The town itself is functional rather than beautiful, but what lies offshore is world-class.

Most visitors pass through Semporna en route to the islands. But the town has its own charm — a lively seafood waterfront, Bajau Laut (Sea Gypsy) stilt villages, and the spectacular Regatta Lepa festival every April.

Islands & Diving

This is why people come to Semporna. The key destinations:

  • Sipadan — Malaysia's only oceanic island. Rising 600m from the seabed. 400+ fish species, barracuda tornados, 20+ turtles per dive. Permit limited to 176-254/day. Full diving guide here.
  • Mabul — Macro diving paradise. Frogfish, nudibranchs, flamboyant cuttlefish, mandarinfish at dusk. Also the main base for Sipadan permits. 45 min from Semporna.
  • Kapalai — Stilted resort on a sandbar. Garden eels, mantis shrimp, ribbon eels. No actual island — just a shallow reef.
  • Mataking — 45 min from Semporna. Wall diving similar to Sipadan, luxury resort, less crowded.
  • Bohey Dulang — Tun Sakaran Marine Park. 600m summit hike with stunning twin lagoon views. RM130 (Malaysian) / RM250 (international) per day.
⚠️ Sipadan permits

Only 176 permits/day (up to 254 max) across 24 licensed operators. Book 6 months in advance. 50% deposit required, full payment 2 weeks before. Minimum 3-night stay at a licensed resort for guaranteed permits. Advanced Open Water certification required since Oct 2022.

Things to Do (In Town)

  • Semporna Seafood Market — Waterfront dining strip. Pick your own live seafood and have it cooked. Best at sunset.
  • Bajau Laut stilt villages — Visible from the waterfront. A unique sea-nomad culture living on the water for generations.
  • Regatta Lepa — Annual festival (end of April, 3 days). Decorated traditional boats, cultural performances, a rare authentic Sabah festival.
  • Tun Sakaran Marine Park — Day trips from RM110-250. Snorkeling, Bohey Dulang hike, island hopping.
  • Snorkeling day trips — Budget-friendly alternative to diving. From RM180 including transfers, lunch, 2 sessions, equipment.

Where to Eat

  • Semporna Ocean Tourism Centre (Waterfront) — Multiple seafood restaurants. Pick live seafood by the kg. Expect RM30-80/person.
  • Fat Mother Restaurant — Popular for Chinese-style seafood. Butter prawns, chilli crab.
  • Local kopitiam — Cheap local meals RM5-10. Try mee goreng basah (wet fried noodles).
  • Night market — Grilled fish, satay, local snacks. Near the town mosque.

Getting There

  • Fly to Tawau (TWU) — 50 min from KK, then ~1 hour drive to Semporna. Most practical route.
  • Bus from KK — RM60-70, approximately 10-11 hours. Not recommended unless budget-tight.
  • Drive from KK — ~531km, 7+ hours. Break into 2-3 day road trip via Sandakan or the interior route via Keningau/Tawau.
  • From Tawau airport — Pre-arranged resort transfers (most dive packages include this) or Grab/taxi ~RM80-100.

Accommodation

Type Where Price Range
Budget Semporna town guesthouses Under RM150/night
Mid-range Semporna town / Seafest Hotel RM150-300/night
Island resorts Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking RM600-1,500+/night (usually packages)

💡 Budget tip

A 4D3N budget all-inclusive trip (accommodation, meals, basic snorkeling) costs ~RM864/person. Stay on Mabul and do house reef snorkeling to keep costs down. Visit April-June for better rates than July-August peak.

Practical Tips

  • Best time to visit: April-June (peak visibility 20-30m, fewer crowds than Jul-Aug). November: Sipadan CLOSED for marine restoration.
  • Security: Semporna is within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone. The town is safe, but some governments advise against island travel in this area. Check your travel advisory.
  • Cash: Bring enough ringgit. ATMs exist in town but can be unreliable. Island resorts may not accept cards.
  • Phone signal: Limited or no signal on most islands (Sipadan, Mabul, Kapalai). Download offline maps.
  • Decompression chamber: Located in Semporna — 089 785 101. Ensure your dive operator carries DAN insurance.
