Mabul is a small island off the southeast coast of Sabah, about 45 minutes by boat from Semporna. It's famous for two things: world-class macro diving (rated among the best on earth for tiny marine life) and being the most popular base for Sipadan dive permits.
The island is split between dive resorts on one side and a traditional Bajau Laut (Sea Gypsy) stilt village community on the other. It's a unique and sometimes jarring contrast — luxury water bungalows next to some of the poorest communities in Sabah.
Diving on Mabul
Mabul is a macro photographer's paradise. The house reefs and surrounding sites are packed with rare, tiny creatures that experienced divers travel the world to see:
- Frogfish — Multiple species, found on almost every dive.
- Flamboyant cuttlefish — One of the most sought-after macro subjects. Vibrant, rare, small.
- Blue-ringed octopus — Frequently spotted (don't touch — highly venomous).
- Nudibranchs — Dozens of species. The diversity is outstanding.
- Mandarinfish — Mating display at dusk near Kapalai jetty. A bucket-list sighting.
- Garden eels — Vast colonies swaying in the current on sandy flats.
- Ribbon eels, mantis shrimp, ghost pipefish — Regular encounters.
Mabul is just 15 minutes by boat from Sipadan. Staying 3+ nights at a licensed Mabul resort is the most reliable way to secure Sipadan dive permits. Most operators allocate permits to their overnight guests first.
Snorkeling
Mabul's house reefs are excellent for snorkeling — you don't need to be a diver to enjoy the island. Day-trip snorkeling packages from Semporna cost approximately RM180 including transfers, lunch, 2 sessions, and equipment. The shallow reefs have good coral cover and plenty of fish.

Bajau Laut Community
About 2,000 Bajau Laut (Sea Gypsies) live in stilt houses on the south side of Mabul. They are a traditionally nomadic maritime people — some of the last sea nomads in the world. Their stilt village is visible from most resort areas.
Be respectful when visiting or photographing. These are real homes, not a tourist attraction. Some community members sell handicrafts and offer guided walks. If you want to support the community, buy directly from villagers rather than through intermediaries.
Practical Tips
- Best months: April-June (20-30m visibility, warm water 27-30°C, fewer crowds). Avoid November (Sipadan closed).
- Book early: 6 months in advance for Sipadan permits. Peak season (Jul-Aug) books out fastest.
- Certification: Advanced Open Water minimum for Sipadan (since Oct 2022). Open Water is fine for Mabul house reef.
- Phone signal: Limited to none. Download everything you need before departure.
- Eco rules: Reef-safe sunscreen only (no oxybenzone/octinoxate). Stay 1m+ from turtles. No touching coral.
- Decompression chamber: Semporna — 089 785 101.
- Security: Mabul is within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone. Resorts have security patrols. Check your government travel advisory.
