Parenting in Sabah: Schools, Childcare & Family Guide

Last updated: 22 June 2026

What do parents need to know about raising children in Sabah?

Sabah offers free government schools, low-cost KEMAS preschools, private and international options, two children’s hospitals and a free national vaccination programme. This hub links every parenting topic — schooling, childcare, healthcare and family financial support — in one place.

Raising a family in Sabah at a glance

Sabah — and Kota Kinabalu especially — is an easygoing place to raise children, with beaches, parks, wildlife and a genuinely multicultural community on the doorstep. Families have the full range of choices, from free government schools and RM20-a-month KEMAS preschools through to British and Cambridge international schools. Two dedicated children’s hospitals and a free national vaccination programme cover the health side.

This page is the starting point. Some topics already have detailed guides elsewhere on SabahGuide — we link straight to those rather than repeat them — and three areas that parents ask about most often (childcare, children’s healthcare, and family financial support) have their own dedicated guides below.

International & private schools

If you want an English-medium British or Cambridge education, Kota Kinabalu has three established international schools. Fees vary by year group, and registration and transport are charged on top.

For the government school system, Chinese national-type and independent schools, vocational pathways and scholarships, see our full Education in Sabah guide and the schools directory. From 1 July 2025, a 6% SST applies to private/international school fees above RM60,000 per student per year.

ℹ️ Enrolment is manual in Sabah

Sabah has no centralised online enrolment portal. For government schools you apply directly and in person at each school — confirm zoning, ask the school or PPD for registration dates, and start 6–12 months ahead. Bring the birth certificate, proof of residence and the health/immunisation form (originals plus copies).

Childcare, healthcare & family support

The three topics parents ask about most — each with its own detailed guide:

Already covered elsewhere on SabahGuide

Rather than repeat them, here are the existing guides that cover the rest of family life in Sabah:

  • Education in Sabah — universities, the government school system, TVET, scholarships and rural-education challenges.
  • Schools directory — public, private and international schools with fee ranges.
  • Kids activities — indoor play, parks, Lok Kawi Wildlife Park, KK Wetlands and rainy-day ideas by age.
  • Healthcare guide — public vs private care and insurance for residents generally.

Frequently asked questions

Q Is Sabah a good place to raise children?
Yes — Kota Kinabalu in particular offers a multicultural, nature-rich and relatively relaxed environment for families. Parents get a full spread of options: free government schools, low-cost government preschools, private and international schools, two dedicated children’s hospitals, and easy access to beaches, parks and wildlife. The main trade-offs are that rural districts have thinner services, and international-school fees climb steeply.
Q How much does childcare cost in Sabah?
Childcare ranges widely. Government KEMAS tabika preschool costs around RM20/month, a registered private TASKA typically runs RM300–500/month (more in urban centres), and private Montessori preschools sit around RM600–1,500/month. See our childcare & preschools guide for the full breakdown.
Q What international schools are in Kota Kinabalu?
The three main international schools are Kinabalu International School (KIS) (British curriculum, 50-year history), Jesselton International School (JIS) (British, IGCSE and A-Levels, opened 2018), and Sayfol International School KK (Cambridge IGCSE and A-Levels). Annual fees broadly range from about RM22,000 to RM56,000+ depending on year group and school.
Q Is school free in Sabah?
Government school tuition is free for all Malaysian citizens. Families still budget around RM500–1,500 a year for uniforms, supplies and activities. Note that Sabah has no centralised online enrolment portal — unlike Peninsular Malaysia, you apply directly and in person at each school.
Q Where do I get my child vaccinated in Sabah?
Malaysia’s National Immunisation Programme is free at any government Klinik Kesihatan. Private clinics offer the same vaccines for a fee with more flexible scheduling. Our children’s healthcare guide sets out the full schedule from birth to school age.
Q How do I enrol my child in a government school in Sabah?
Apply directly to the school in person. Confirm your home address falls in the school’s zone, contact the school or District Education Office (PPD) for registration dates, and bring originals plus copies of the birth certificate, proof of residence, and the health/immunisation form. Start inquiries 6–12 months ahead.
