Family Support in Sabah: Subsidies, Tax Relief & EPF

Last updated: 22 June 2026

What financial support is available to families in Sabah?

Sabah families may qualify for the RM100/month Bantuan Prasekolah childcare subsidy (household income under RM1,500), parent tax reliefs of up to RM3,000 for preschool fees, and EPF medical withdrawals. Active local and national parent communities offer day-to-day advice.

ℹ️ General information, not financial or tax advice

Subsidy amounts, tax reliefs and EPF rules are set by government agencies and change from year to year. The figures here are a general guide — always confirm the current terms directly with JKM, LHDN (Inland Revenue) and KWSP (EPF) before relying on them.

Family financial support at a glance

Raising children is one of the biggest costs families face, and there are several forms of government help worth knowing about in Sabah — a childcare subsidy for lower-income households, tax reliefs for parents, and EPF facilities for medical costs. None of them are large on their own, but together they take some weight off the monthly budget.

This guide summarises what exists and where to apply. Because the exact amounts and eligibility rules change each year, treat the figures as a starting point and confirm the current terms with the relevant agency.

Childcare subsidy — Bantuan Prasekolah

The Bantuan Prasekolah subsidy provides RM100 a month towards childcare for eligible families, where the household earns under RM1,500 a month and the child attends a JKM-registered centre. Apply through your district JKM (Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat) office.

The registered-centre requirement is the key practical point: it pays to choose a licensed TASKA from the start. Our childcare & preschools guide explains how to check a centre’s JKM licence.

Tax relief for parents

Malaysian parents can reduce taxable income through several reliefs. For the 2024 assessment year these included up to RM3,000 for fees for children aged 6 and below in public or private preschools, alongside medical-expense relief for children. There are also broader reliefs for each dependent child that are claimed through your annual filing.

Tax reliefs are revised most years in the national budget, so check the figures for the current assessment year on the LHDN (Inland Revenue) website before filing.

EPF and employer benefits

EPF (KWSP) offers a health withdrawal facility that can help cover certain approved medical costs for members and their dependents, subject to KWSP’s conditions. Separately, some employers provide childcare subsidies or allowances as part of their benefits package — worth asking your HR department about, as it is easy to overlook.

Parent communities & advice

Beyond money, a good support network makes parenting easier — especially if you are new to Sabah. Active local Facebook groups include Kota Kinabalu Expats and Expats in KK, plus general “KK mums” and “Sabah parents” groups for recommendations on schools, clinics and childcare.

For broader Malaysian parenting content, trusted platforms include MumCentre, Motherhood Story, Positive Parenting, Makchic, IBU Family (breastfeeding, birth and postpartum support), and UNICEF Malaysia’s parenting resources.

Frequently asked questions

Q What childcare subsidy can I get in Sabah?
The Bantuan Prasekolah childcare subsidy provides RM100 a month for a child in a JKM-registered childcare centre, for households earning under RM1,500 a month. Apply through your district JKM (Social Welfare Department) office. Amounts and eligibility are set by JKM and can change — confirm the current terms before applying.
Q How much tax relief do parents get in Malaysia?
For the 2024 assessment year, parents could claim up to RM3,000 in relief for fees for children aged 6 and below in public or private preschools, plus medical-expense relief for children. Tax reliefs are set annually by LHDN (the Inland Revenue Board) — check the current year’s rules before filing. This is general information, not tax advice.
Q Can I use my EPF for my child’s medical costs?
EPF (KWSP) provides a health withdrawal facility that can be used towards certain medical costs, subject to KWSP’s conditions and approved treatment/illness lists. Check the latest eligibility and approved-condition list directly with KWSP before relying on it.
Q Who qualifies for Bantuan Prasekolah?
The childcare subsidy is aimed at lower-income households earning under RM1,500/month whose child attends a JKM-registered childcare centre. Because it requires a registered centre, choosing a licensed TASKA matters — see our childcare guide. Apply at your district JKM office.
Q Where can Sabah parents find community and advice online?
Local Facebook groups such as Kota Kinabalu Expats and Expats in KK (plus “KK mums” / “Sabah parents” searches) are active for day-to-day questions. National platforms include MumCentre, Motherhood Story, Positive Parenting, Makchic, IBU Family (breastfeeding and postpartum support), and UNICEF Malaysia’s parenting resources.
