Is Grab available in Kota Kinabalu?
Yes. Grab works in Kota Kinabalu and surrounding suburbs like Penampang and Putatan. Outside KK, Grab lists Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu, Kudat, Kota Marudu and Tenom among its Malaysian locations, but not Kundasang, Ranau or Semporna. For areas without Grab, try another e-hailing app, local taxis or a transfer arranged by your hotel.
Grab is the most widely used e-hailing app in Sabah. It works well in Kota Kinabalu and in some other towns, but coverage drops off quickly outside urban areas.

Outside of KK, don't rely on Grab as your primary transport. Driver numbers are lower and waits can be long, even in the larger towns.
Getting around KK: Grab or something else?
- Short trip in the city, travelling light Pink bus or Grab The BAS.MY pink bus starts at RM0.80 if your route is on it. Grab picks you up where you are.
- Late at night, heavy bags, or a group Grab Fewer drivers are online late at night, so allow extra time.
- A town Grab does not list maxim or your hotel maxim lists Kota Belud, Ranau and Semporna. Or ask your hotel or homestay to arrange a pickup.

How Fares Work
Grab shows the price before you book. Grab says this upfront price excludes tolls and surcharges (Grab Malaysia, checked 7 October 2026). Fares vary with distance, time of day and demand, and are often higher at peak times and in heavy rain. Check the price in the app, and compare with another app before you book.
Other E-Hailing Options
- AirAsia Ride: launched in Kota Kinabalu in September 2022 (AirAsia Newsroom, checked 7 October 2026). Check the airasia app for current availability.
- maxim: lists Kota Kinabalu and many other Sabah towns, including Kota Belud, Ranau, Semporna, Sandakan and Tawau (maxim Malaysia, checked 7 October 2026). Worth trying where Grab has no drivers.
In practice, Grab has the most drivers and is the most reliable. Keep one or two alternatives installed for comparison.
Tips for Using Grab in Sabah
- Get a local SIM: mobile data and a local number make it easier for drivers to call you on arrival.
- Payment: Grab accepts cash, credit or debit card, GrabPay and PayLater (Grab Malaysia, checked 7 October 2026). Carry some cash as a backup.
- Pin your exact location: some addresses in KK don't map well. Drop a pin on the map for accuracy.
- Be patient at night: fewer drivers are online late at night, even in KK.
- GrabFood: food delivery is available in KK.
- GrabMart: grocery and convenience store delivery in KK.
When Grab Won't Work
For situations where Grab isn't available or practical:
- Airport to rural destinations — Arrange pickup through your hotel or homestay
- Inter-town travel — Use buses, minivans, or rent a car
- Island trips — Boats leave from South Jetty inside Kota Kinabalu Port, where the Jesselton Point ferry terminal moved in February 2026 (Daily Express, checked 7 October 2026). No e-hailing on the islands
- Mount Kinabalu area — Your accommodation can arrange transport
- Semporna/dive towns — Dive operators usually arrange airport pickup from Tawau
If you're heading somewhere without Grab, ask your hotel to arrange return transport. Most hotels and homestays outside KK are used to organising pickups for guests.
