Tuaran is the first town north of KK on the road to Kudat and the Tip of Borneo. It's a small, unassuming place, but every Sabahan knows it for one thing: Tuaran Mee — hand-rolled egg noodles wok-fried to perfection. It's one of Sabah's signature dishes, and the original versions in Tuaran town are the best.
Beyond noodles, Tuaran offers a charming water village, family-friendly river rafting, and a genuine slice of rural west coast Sabah — all just 30 minutes from KK.
Things to Do
- Eat Tuaran Mee — The main reason people come. Multiple kopitiam in town serve the original version — handmade egg noodles fried with egg and char siu pork. Non-halal original; seafood version also available. Best for breakfast or lunch.
- Mengkabong Water Village — A Bajau fishing village built on stilts over the river. Boat rides through the village, mangrove scenery, and a glimpse of traditional water-dwelling life. Photogenic at sunrise.
- Kiulu River rafting — Grade 1-2, 15km, approximately 1.5 hours. Family-friendly (age 5+). A gentle, scenic float through lush countryside. From ~RM235/person. Best February-September.
- Tuaran Crocodile Farm — Small farm with crocodile exhibits. Educational for kids. Be aware: crocodiles are present in Tuaran's rivers — don't swim in murky water, especially after 6pm.
- Tuaran Sunday Tamu — Smaller than Kota Belud's but still authentic. Local produce, snacks, and village goods.
Tuaran is just 30 minutes from KK — perfect for a morning trip. Eat Tuaran Mee for breakfast, visit Mengkabong village, then continue north to Kota Belud or head back to KK. No overnight needed.
Where to Eat
- Kedai Kopi Tuaran Mee stalls — Multiple shops in town centre. Look for the busy ones with locals — that's where the noodles are best. RM6-10 per plate.
- Seafood restaurants — Fresh river and sea fish. Simple, cheap, good.
- Roadside stalls — Pisang goreng (fried banana), kuih, and local snacks along the highway.
Getting There
- Drive from KK — ~33km, approximately 30 minutes north via the highway. Easy drive.
- En route to Kudat — Tuaran is the first stop on the KK → Kota Belud → Kudat road trip.
- Public transport — Minivans from KK (Inanam terminal). Frequent but slow.
Accommodation
Being so close to KK, most visitors don't stay overnight in Tuaran. If you want to:
| Type | Style | Price Range |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Town guesthouses | RM40-70/night |
| Riverside | Kiulu area lodges (for rafting) | RM80-200/night |
Practical Tips
- Best time for Tuaran Mee: Breakfast or early lunch. Some shops sell out by early afternoon.
- Crocodile warning: Crocodiles are present in Tuaran's rivers. Don't swim in rivers, especially after 6pm or in murky water.
- Kiulu rafting: Gentler than Padas (Grade 1-2 vs Grade 3-4). Great for families with young kids (age 5+).
- Combine stops: Tuaran → Kota Belud → Kudat is the classic north Sabah road trip. Allow a full day or overnight at Kudat.
