Electricity calculator questions

Q What are SESB's home electricity rates in 2026?

From 1 February 2026 SESB's domestic tariff (DM) is 22.02 sen per unit for the first 200 units, 37.76 sen for units 201–300, 49.26 sen for 301–600, 51.49 sen for 601–1,000, 54.69 sen for 1,001–1,500 and 59.85 sen above 1,500, with a minimum charge of RM5 a month. Each price applies only to the units inside its band (SESB Tariff Booklet 2026, Schedule 1). A unit is one kilowatt-hour (kWh). More on why the rates changed: Sabah's electricity tariff and subsidy explained.

Q How much is a 300 kWh or 500 kWh SESB bill?

At the 2026 rates the energy charge for 300 units is RM81.80 and for 500 units RM180.32, before any service tax, ICPT, rebates or arrears. The same 600 units cost RM26.58 more than under the old 2014 rates, in line with SESB's "up to RM27" for the 85% of homes that use 600 units or less (Borneo Post, 31 January 2026).

Q Do I pay service tax on my SESB bill?

Only if you use more than 600 units a month, and only on the units above 600. From 1 March 2024, the Treasury said, the 8% service tax is charged only on usage above 600 kWh (Utusan Malaysia, 28 February 2024); RTM reported the same rule for SESB customers (RTM, 28 February 2024). At 600 units or less there is none. The calculator adds it automatically; check the "Cukai Perkhidmatan" line on your bill to compare.

Q How do you estimate each appliance?

Power on the label × how hard it works × hours on. Aircons start from horsepower: about 0.67 kW for a 1.0hp inverter and 1.2 kW for a 1.5hp (our typical figures from maker spec sheets; 0.75, 2.0 and 2.5hp are scaled from those). We assume an inverter averages half its full power once the room is cool, and that each degree colder adds about 6% (India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency, via Business Today). Hot-and-cold water dispensers use 0.24–1.16 kWh a day in Hong Kong's tests (EMSD). Other appliances start from typical wattages; the label on yours is always better, and a meter test under "Make it exact" replaces our guesses.

Q Why is the estimate different from my bill?

Usually an appliance runs longer than you think, something is missing from the list, or an old fridge or heater works harder than its label. Tap "Check against my bill", type the units from a few bills, then test your biggest appliance on the meter.

Q Is my information stored anywhere?

No. Everything you type stays in your browser on this device. Share links and the share picture include only your totals and top 3 appliances, and only when you tap share. Your full list is never sent.
