Shopping & Souvenirs in Kota Kinabalu

Last updated: 2026-03-10

Shopping Malls in KK

Imago is the premium option — 4 floors, 300+ stores including Michael Kors and H&M, with daily traditional dance performances. Suria Sabah in the city center offers modern shopping with South China Sea views. Centre Point Sabah (est. 1990s) is budget-friendly and popular with students and families. Oceanus Waterfront Mall features nautical design and a 2km boardwalk. Other options: Jesselton Mall, Wisma Merdeka, Kompleks Karamunsing, and City Mall.

Traditional Markets

Gaya Street Sunday Market (Sundays 6:30am-1pm) shuts down the entire street for arts, crafts, batik sarongs, fruits, flowers, snacks, and antiques. Filipino Market (daily 4pm-10pm, handicraft section morning-midnight) is the go-to for budget souvenirs and fresh seafood. Tamu markets in Kota Belud (traditional machetes, mengkuang mats, Bajau handicrafts), Donggongon (Thursday-Friday, fresh produce), and Tamparuli offer authentic rural market experiences.

Unique Sabah Souvenirs

South Sea Pearls

Cream, white, pink, or blue-grey shades at bargain prices compared to international rates. Buy from trusted sources like Jamilah Jewellery. Avoid any "authentic" pearls under RM5 — they're plastic or shell.

Batik

RM20-60. Shawls, scarves, sashes, tapestries, and table runners with Sabah native motifs. Beautiful and lightweight souvenirs.

Rattan & Woven Items

RM5-60. Wakid baskets (RM10-25), mats, bags, hats, containers, and vases. Handwoven by indigenous artisans.

Rungus Beadwork

Pinakol — multi-colored off-loom handstrung beads in red, white, and black geometric patterns (man, shield, flower, animal motifs). Vinusak neckpieces symbolize young flower buds and life. Authentic pieces from the Rungus ethnic group of northern Sabah.

Local Chocolates

Cocoa Kingdom (Borneo's largest chocolate souvenir shop) offers durian chocolate, tiramisu, and mango varieties. Hoko Cocoa produces 3-in-1 cocoa drinks, syrup, spread, and truffles.

Sabah Tea

The only organic tea plantation in Borneo, grown in Mount Kinabalu's shadow. Available at Kadaiku near Sinsuran Complex.

Food Souvenirs

Crispy peanuts (fried with flour, garlic, salt, sugar), kuih cincin (ring cakes — palm sugar and rice flour), amplang (crunchy savory crackers — fish, prawn, squid flavors). Lightweight and packable.

Other

Decorative gongs (RM10-80), lihing rice wine (check customs regulations), T-shirts (~RM40), Lepa-Lepa boat figures, Sompoton (traditional instrument), and Bajau parang machetes.

🚨 What NOT to Buy (CITES Protected)
Elephant ivory, marine turtle products, rhino and tiger products, pangolin leather, and some coral and seashells are strictly PROHIBITED. Buying or exporting these items carries confiscation and legal penalties. When in doubt, don't buy.

Duty-Free Shopping (Labuan)

Labuan island has duty-free status. Alcohol, cigarettes, chocolates, perfumes, cosmetics, and jewelry at reduced prices. Main shopping areas: Jalan Merdeka, Jalan OKK Awang Besar (near ferry), Labuan Financial Park. Allowances for 24+ hour stays: 1L wine/spirit/malt, 225g tobacco, RM1,000 other goods.

Bargaining Tips

Only bargain in markets without fixed prices — never in malls, supermarkets, or restaurants. Vendors typically start at 2x or more the actual price. Know the price range beforehand, negotiate total price for bulk purchases, be polite, say "mahal" (expensive) with friendly shock, and be willing to walk away. Avoid asking for change from large notes.

Q Where can I find authentic Sabah souvenirs?
Kadaiku (near Sinsuran Complex) specializes in 100% authentic Sabah products — the most complete and diverse collection. Mari Mari Cultural Village sells verified local artisan crafts. Sabah Art Gallery offers authentic traditional pieces. Filipino Market has a mix — inspect quality carefully as mass-produced items are common.
Q Are the pearls at Filipino Market real?
Be cautious. Avoid any "authentic" pearls selling for under RM5 — they are likely plastic or shell. Jamilah Jewellery is a trusted source for verified authentic South Sea pearls. Real Sabah pearls come in cream, white, pink, or blue-grey and are significantly cheaper than international prices but not dirt cheap.
Q Can I bring lihing (rice wine) home?
Possibly, but check your airline's and destination country's customs regulations first. Lihing is traditional fermented glutinous rice wine — sweet and refreshing. It may be restricted by alcohol import limits. Declare it at customs to be safe.
Q Is bargaining acceptable?
Only in markets without fixed prices (Filipino Market, Gaya Street Sunday Market, tamu markets). NEVER bargain in malls, supermarkets, restaurants, or shops with displayed prices. Strategy: vendors typically quote 2x+ the actual price. Be polite, say "mahal" (expensive), negotiate total for bulk purchases, and be willing to walk away.
