How we check KK dentists
Data date 11 Oct 2026 · next check January 2027
The short version
We collected 22,113 Google reviews for the 139 dental clinics in our Kota Kinabalu directory. Then we ran ten checks on each clinic that has enough history. A clinic is Recommended only if it passes all ten.
We have not visited these clinics or checked the quality of treatment ourselves. This guide tells you whose online reputation holds up when you look closely. It does not replace your own judgement or a second opinion.
Who gets checked
A clinic needs enough history to judge fairly:
- at least 24 months on Google
- at least 50 reviews
- at least 10 reviews in the last 12 months
47 of the 139 KK dental clinics in our directory meet this. The rest are still listed, just not rated.
The ten checks
- Registered premise. We look up the clinic premise in the Malaysian Dental Council register for Sabah. This shows that the premise is registered. It does not show that every dentist working there is registered. The register can only be searched by practitioner name, so a clinic we could not match is shown as "Not matched", which is not the same as unregistered.
- Reviewer independence. We look for the same group of reviewers moving across several clinics.
- Review rhythm. We look for sudden spikes of five-star reviews in the last 36 months that are very unlikely by chance compared with the clinic's normal pace.
- Review text. We look for many near-identical reviews, an unusually high share of very short five-star reviews, and wording that suggests a reward for reviewing.
- No adverts posted as reviews. We look for promotional copy posted as a review.
- Rating spread. We compare the share of low ratings with other KK dentists of a similar size.
- Serious complaints. We read every 1–2 star review from the last 24 months, twice, in two separate AI-assisted reads, looking for credible reports of hygiene problems, treatment harm, unqualified staff or charges well above the quote.
- Owner replies. We check whether the clinic's public replies disclose patient details or attack reviewers.
- Wider presence. We check for a claimed Google profile, a website, opening hours, a phone number, photos and time in business.
- Stability. We combine the checks five different ways, giving more weight each time to a different one: equal, reviewer independence, review text, wider presence and recent activity. A clinic's tier has to stay the same in all five.
"Best for" labels
A clinic gets a label like braces or kids only when at least 10 of its 4–5★ reviews mention it and they make up a fair share of its reviews. Open Sunday comes from the clinic's Google hours, so call ahead.
What the tiers mean
- Recommended: passed all ten checks, has an average of 4.7★ or more, a low share of recent complaints, and is in the top 40% of checked clinics whichever way we weight the checks.
- Solid: has an average of 4.5★ or more and a low share of recent complaints, but missed at least one bar for Recommended. Many good clinics land here. Asking happy patients for reviews is normal and can trip the rhythm check.
- Listed: in our directory but not rated Recommended or Solid. This covers clinics that were checked and did not reach Solid, clinics under review, and government clinics. Clinics too new or too small to judge are on the full directory list.
How we word what we find
A failed check is a pattern in public data. It is not proof of wrongdoing. We describe it as "a pattern consistent with…" and never as fake, bought or fraudulent.
Privacy
We do not store reviewer names, profile links or photos. Reviewer IDs are turned into one-way codes as soon as we collect them. We never publish review text longer than a short phrase.
Disclosure
SabahGuide is run by Bingo Digital, a web design and marketing agency in Kota Kinabalu. Some clinics in this guide are Bingo clients. Each of them is marked on its card, and every one was checked by the same rules. No clinic can pay for a tier.
