Eco-Volunteering in Sabah — Conservation Programs

Last updated: 2026-03-10

Wildlife Conservation Programs

Orangutan Rehabilitation (Sepilok)

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre rehabilitates orphaned and injured orangutans. The Orangutan Appeal UK offers fully funded 12-week placements for UK residents (including flights, accommodation, and allowance). Third-party programs cost approximately EUR425-700/week for 2-8 weeks. Requirements include vaccinations (TB, Hepatitis, Tetanus, Rabies) and often a 7-day quarantine period. Coordinated through the Sabah Wildlife Department.

Sun Bear Conservation (BSBCC)

The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre offers 2-4 week placements. Two weeks cost approximately GBP1,499 (~USD1,900), four weeks GBP2,199 (~USD2,800), including airport transfers, accommodation, food, training, and placement. Activities include enrichment programs, habitat maintenance, and behavioural observation. Private rooms available for a supplement.

Sea Turtle Conservation

Selingan Island (part of Turtle Islands National Park) focuses on egg protection from poachers. Libaran Island runs an award-winning project with tent accommodation. Both involve nest monitoring, egg protection, and community engagement. Contact Sabah Parks for current pricing and availability.

Marine Conservation

TRACC on Pom Pom Island (Semporna) leads coral reef restoration via micro-fragmentation, having planted over 75,000 coral fragments across 6 years. The program runs 2-12 weeks (minimum 2 weeks) at approximately USD750 for 5 days, including transport, food, dive gear, and unlimited snorkeling. Expect 3-4 dives per day, 6 days per week, 9am-5pm. Accommodation is shared beachfront dorm-style — as they say, it is a conservation centre, not a resort.

Requirements: 18+, confident swimmer. Scuba certification (PADI) available on-site for non-divers.

⚠️ Spotting Scam Programs

Ethical programs never promise direct animal interaction — that is a red flag. Look for transparent fee breakdowns, published impact metrics, physical addresses, and phone numbers. Trusted Sabah organisations include TRACC, BSBCC, Sabah Wildlife Department, and Borneo Eco Tours with the BEST Society.

Community & Habitat Programs

Teaching English

Borneo Komrad runs alternative learning centres for marginalised children. Stairway to Hope provides free education for ages 7-16. ElShaddai Sabah supports displaced communities. Programs run 2-12 weeks from USD395/2 weeks.

Kinabatangan Habitat Restoration (KOPEL)

Live with the Orang Sungai (People of the River) while doing invasive weed removal from Tungog Lake, tree planting, and seedling nursery care. Programs cost approximately USD1,318+ for a week. Year-round availability with 7-day options.

Q How much does volunteering in Sabah cost?
From USD395/2 weeks for teaching programs to GBP1,499-2,199 for 2-4 weeks at BSBCC (Sun Bear Conservation Centre). TRACC marine conservation runs approximately USD750 for 5 days. Most programs include accommodation, meals, transfers, and training. Flights, visa, and travel insurance are usually not included.
Q What is the minimum duration?
Short-term options start at 1-2 weeks (teaching, Kinabatangan habitat work). TRACC marine requires minimum 2 weeks. BSBCC recommends 2-4 weeks. Long-term research positions and internships run 3-12 months. Most programs have flexible start dates year-round.
Q Do I need special skills or qualifications?
Most programs require no prior experience — just basic English, good fitness, and willingness to work in tropical conditions. Marine programs require confident swimming; scuba certification is available on-site at TRACC. Children's programs require background checks. Some wildlife programs require specific vaccinations (TB, Hepatitis, Tetanus, Rabies).
Q How do I spot a scam volunteer program?
Green flags: transparent website with mission and staff profiles, published impact metrics, long verifiable track record, and clear fee breakdowns. Red flags: excessive upfront fees without transparency, email-only contact, promises of direct animal interaction (ethical programs avoid this), no verifiable staff, and tourism focus over conservation goals. Trusted organisations include TRACC, BSBCC, and Sabah Wildlife Department.
