5-Day Family Itinerary — Sabah with Kids

Last updated: March 2026

Sabah is one of the best family destinations in Southeast Asia. Where else can your kids see wild orangutans in the morning, snorkel over coral reefs after lunch, and watch the sunset from a beach where the sky turns pink? This 5-day itinerary is designed around family rhythms — avoiding long drives, building in rest time, and grouping activities by what works for different age groups.

💡 Planning around kids

The biggest mistake families make in Sabah is packing too much into each day. This itinerary has one main activity per day with built-in downtime. If your kids need naps, skip the afternoon optional activities. The best family memories come from unhurried mornings, not from ticking off every attraction.

Day 1: KK Wildlife & Beach

Morning

  • 9:00 AM — Check into your hotel. Family-friendly picks: Shangri-La Rasa Ria (5-star, Cool Zone kids club 4-12, kids eat free under 6, 3km private beach) or Nexus Karambunai (5-star, 3 pools + children's pool).
  • 10:00 AM — Head to Lok Kawi Wildlife Park (20 minutes from KK). RM20/adult, RM10/child (foreign). Open 9:30am-5:30pm. See Borneo pygmy elephants, orangutans, sun bears, proboscis monkeys, and hornbills. The kids will love the mini train ride and animal shows (11:15am and 3:15pm).

Afternoon

  • 12:30 PM — Lunch at a family-friendly restaurant in KK. Haus Cafe or One Roof Cafe both have kids-friendly menus and air conditioning.
  • 2:00 PM — Rest time at hotel pool. Let the kids swim and decompress from travel. Don't fight jet lag — lean into it.

Evening

  • 4:30 PM — Drive to Tanjung Aru Beach (15 minutes). Let the kids play in the calm, shallow water while you watch Sabah's famous sunset. The sand is golden and the water is warm year-round.
  • 6:30 PM — Dinner at the Tanjung Aru beach food stalls or drive back to the KK Night Market for family-friendly BBQ seafood and satay (RM3-10 per stick).

Day 2: Mountain Day Trip

Morning

  • 7:30 AM — Early start for the 2-hour drive to Kinabalu Park. Pack snacks and entertainment for the car. The mountain views begin about 1 hour into the drive.
  • 9:30 AM — Arrive at Kinabalu Park (RM15/adult, RM10/child). Take the Silau-Silau Trail (flat, easy, suitable for strollers on the boardwalk section) or Mountain View Trail (15-30 minutes, stunning views of Mount Kinabalu).
  • 11:00 AM — Visit the Mountain Garden — guided tours available, great for older kids interested in plants and pitcher plants (Sabah has over 1,200 orchid species).

Afternoon

  • 12:00 PM — Drive 15 minutes to Kundasang for lunch. The town sits at 1,500 meters elevation — noticeably cooler. Try a local restaurant for vegetable tempura and steamboat.
  • 1:30 PM — Visit Desa Dairy Farm. Kids can feed cows, drink fresh milk, and enjoy the rolling green hills that look like New Zealand. Entry is free, activities around RM10-20.
  • 3:00 PM — Head back to KK. Kids will likely nap in the car.

Evening

  • 5:30 PM — Casual evening. Dinner at your hotel or a nearby restaurant. Early bedtime after a big day.

Day 3: Island Adventure

Morning

  • 8:30 AM — Head to Jesselton Point for the boat to Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park (RM23 return, 15-20 minutes). Choose Manukan Island for best facilities (changing rooms, life jackets available, food stalls) or Sapi Island for quieter beaches.
  • 9:30 AM — Snorkeling as a family. Life jackets are available for kids. The shallow areas near the beach have colorful fish visible even from the surface. For non-swimmers, a glass-bottom boat tour is available (around RM30-50/person).

Afternoon

  • 12:00 PM — Lunch on the island (BBQ packages available from RM40-80/person, or bring packed lunch).
  • 1:30 PM — Build sandcastles, collect shells, or go kayaking (RM40-60/hour per kayak). The water is calm and warm.
  • 3:00 PM — Return to KK. Rinse off and rest.

Evening

  • 5:30 PM — Sunset from the waterfront. Walk the esplanade — kids can run along the boardwalk.
  • 6:30 PM — Dinner at Sedco Complex food court — affordable, varied, and family-friendly. Try the Malay chicken rice or nasi lemak.

Day 4: Sepilok Orangutans

ℹ️ Getting to Sandakan

Two options: fly KK to Sandakan (45 minutes, from RM120 one-way on MASwings) or drive (6 hours). For families with young kids, flying is strongly recommended. Book morning flights to maximize your day.

Practical Tips

⚠️ Heat management

Sabah is hot (28-33°C) and humid. Avoid outdoor activities between 11am and 3pm if possible. Carry water bottles, use sunscreen, and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces. Kids dehydrate faster than adults.

Getting Around

  • Car rental — RM110-150/day for an SUV. Best option for families — you control the schedule. Book car seats in advance (RM15/day + RM200 deposit).
  • Grab — Available in KK but car seats not guaranteed. Some drivers have them, most don't.
  • Internal flights — MASwings flies KK to Sandakan (45 min, from RM120). Much better than 6-hour drive with kids.

Food Tips for Kids

  • Chicken rice and fried noodles (mee goreng) are available everywhere and usually kid-approved.
  • Roti canai (flatbread) for breakfast — plain or with condensed milk — is a hit with most kids.
  • Fresh tropical fruits: mango, papaya, watermelon available at every market.
  • Most restaurants in tourist areas can tone down spice on request.

Variations

Shorter (3-Day) Version

Days 1, 3, and 5 make a great condensed trip. Skip Sepilok (saves a flight) and Kinabalu (saves the drive). Focus on KK city, islands, and cultural village.

Add Kinabatangan River (7 Days)

After Sepilok, continue to Kinabatangan River for a 2-night stay. Kids will see wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, and crocodiles from river boats. Dawn and dusk cruises are the highlights. Budget RM2,000-3,500 for the family add-on.

Rainy Season Adaptation

During November-February, replace island day with indoor activities: Sabah State Museum (RM15/adult, RM10/child), Imago Mall aquarium, or an indoor cooking class. Morning activities are usually rain-free even in wet season.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Is Sabah safe for families with young children?
Yes. West coast Sabah (KK, Kundasang, islands) is very safe for families. Standard precautions apply — sun protection, mosquito repellent, and supervising children near water. Most family-friendly attractions are well-managed with safety rails and guides.
Q What age is suitable for the Poring canopy walk?
Children age 5 and above can do the canopy walk (41 meters high, 157 meters long). Under-5s are not permitted. The walkway sways slightly and has mesh flooring — some younger kids find it scary. Parents know their children best.
Q Can we rent car seats in Sabah?
Yes, but availability is limited. Car seat rental costs RM15/day with a RM200 deposit. Book through your car rental company in advance — not all have stock. Alternatively, bring your own travel car seat. Malaysian law requires car seats for children under 12.
Q What food will my kids eat in Sabah?
Sabah food is generally kid-friendly. Plain rice with chicken, fried noodles (mee goreng), chicken satay, roti canai (flatbread), and fruit are available everywhere. Western food is easy to find in KK. Most restaurants in tourist areas are used to serving families.
Q How far apart are the attractions?
KK to Kundasang/Kinabalu Park: 2 hours. KK to Sepilok: 6 hours by road or 45 minutes by flight to Sandakan. Islands are 15-20 minutes by boat from KK. Plan around nap times and keep driving days under 3 hours for young kids.
Q Is there a kids club at any resort?
Yes. Shangri-La Rasa Ria has Cool Zone kids club for ages 4-12. Nexus Karambunai has a children pool and kids activities. Shangri-La Tanjung Aru offers family programs. Kids under 6 eat free at Shangri-La Rasa Ria.
Q Do we need travel insurance for families?
Strongly recommended. Allianz offers family travel insurance from RM110+ (20% discount for groups of 5+). Individual coverage starts from RM18. Ensure it covers medical evacuation — the nearest major hospital is Queen Elizabeth II in KK.
Q Can toddlers visit Sepilok Orangutan Centre?
Yes. The boardwalk trails are stroller-accessible for the main viewing areas. Feeding times are 10am and 3pm (20-30 minutes each). Keep toddlers quiet during feeding to avoid disturbing the orangutans. The nursery viewing gallery is air-conditioned.
