Grab & E-Hailing

Last updated: March 2026

Grab is the primary e-hailing app in Sabah (and all of Malaysia). It works well in Kota Kinabalu and reasonably in a few other towns, but coverage drops off quickly outside urban areas.

Where Grab Works

Location Grab Availability Notes
Kota Kinabalu✅ GoodReliable coverage across the city and suburbs
Penampang✅ GoodPart of KK metro area
Putatan✅ GoodPart of KK metro area
Sandakanâš ī¸ LimitedSome drivers available, longer wait times
Tawauâš ī¸ LimitedWorks in town centre, sporadic outside
Kota Belud❌ RareVery few drivers
Kundasang / Ranau❌ NoNo coverage
Semporna❌ NoUse local taxis
Interior towns❌ NoNot available
â„šī¸ Reality check

Outside of KK, don't rely on Grab as your primary transport. Coverage is unreliable and wait times can be 15–30+ minutes even in Sandakan.

Typical Fares

Grab fares in KK are affordable compared to taxis and much cheaper than in KL or Singapore.

Route (within KK) Approximate Fare
Airport → City CentreRM15–25
City Centre → Imago MallRM8–12
City Centre → Sutera HarbourRM10–15
City Centre → PenampangRM12–18
City Centre → 1Borneo MallRM15–22
Airport → Shangri-La Tanjung AruRM8–12

Fares increase during peak hours (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM) and rain. Surge pricing can double the normal fare during heavy rain.

Other E-Hailing Options

  • AirAsia Ride — Available in KK. Sometimes cheaper than Grab. Worth checking both apps.
  • MyCar — Occasionally available but very limited driver pool in Sabah.
  • maxim — Growing presence in KK. Can be cheaper than Grab during peak hours.

In practice, Grab has the most drivers and is the most reliable. Keep one or two alternatives installed for comparison.

Tips for Using Grab in Sabah

  • Get a local SIM — Grab needs a Malaysian phone number to register. Tourist SIMs work.
  • Use GrabPay or cash — Both are accepted. Having cash as backup is smart in case of payment issues.
  • Pin your exact location — Some addresses in KK don't map well. Drop a pin on the map for accuracy.
  • Be patient at night — Driver availability drops significantly after 10 PM, even in KK.
  • GrabFood — Works well in KK for food delivery. Good range of restaurant options.
  • GrabMart — Available for grocery and convenience store delivery in KK.

When Grab Won't Work

For situations where Grab isn't available or practical:

  • Airport to rural destinations — Arrange pickup through your hotel or homestay
  • Inter-town travel — Use buses, minivans, or rent a car
  • Island trips — Ferries from Jesselton Point, no e-hailing on islands
  • Mount Kinabalu area — Your accommodation can arrange transport
  • Semporna/dive towns — Dive operators usually arrange airport pickup from Tawau
💡 Pro tip

If you're heading somewhere without Grab, ask your hotel to arrange return transport. Most hotels and homestays outside KK are used to organising pickups for guests.
