Beaches
Sabah has plenty of coastline but not every beach is Instagram-worthy. The best sand and clearest water are on the islands. Mainland beaches are fine for sunsets and local atmosphere but manage your expectations for the water.
If you're coming for pristine white sand beaches, head to the islands (TARP, Semporna, Mantanani). Mainland beaches are more about scenery, sunsets, and local vibes than crystal-clear water.
KK and West Coast
| Beach | Location | Good For | Water Clarity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tanjung Aru Beach | KK (10 min from centre) | Sunsets, food stalls, local hangout | Average |
| Nexus Karambunai | 30 min north of KK | Resort beach, long sandy stretch | Good |
| Dalit Bay | Shangri-La Rasa Ria | Resort beach, orangutan centre nearby | Good |
| Pantai Kelambu | Kudat | Remote, uncrowded, white sand | Good |
Tanjung Aru is where locals go for the sunset — it's a social experience more than a beach day. The food stalls along the beach are the real attraction. Don't swim here expecting crystal water.
Northern Sabah
| Beach | Location | Good For | Water Clarity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tip of Borneo | Kudat (2.5h from KK) | Dramatic headland, photo spot, swimming | Good–Excellent |
| Kalampunian Beach | Near Tip of Borneo | Long white sand, quiet | Good |
| Bavang Jamal Beach | Kudat area | Secluded, very few tourists | Good |
The Kudat/Tip of Borneo area has the best mainland beaches in Sabah. Worth the 2.5-hour drive from KK, ideally combined with an overnight stay.
East Coast
| Beach | Location | Good For | Water Clarity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bak Bak Beach | Kudat | Rocky, dramatic, unique landscape | Average |
| Sandakan beaches | Sandakan area | Local recreation | Poor–Average |
| Semporna town | Semporna | Jetty town — not a beach destination | Skip it |
On the east coast, skip the mainland beaches entirely and head straight to the islands. Semporna, Sandakan, and the Turtle Islands are where the magic is.
Island Beaches
The best beaches in Sabah are all on islands. Here are the highlights:
| Beach / Island | Sand | Water | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manukan Island (TARP) | White | Excellent | 15 min boat from KK |
| Sapi Island (TARP) | White | Excellent | 15 min boat from KK |
| Mantanani Island | White, powdery | Excellent | 90 min from KK + 60 min boat |
| Mataking Island | White | Crystal clear | Semporna, 45 min boat |
| Pom Pom Island | White | Crystal clear | Semporna, 45 min boat |
| Lankayan Island | White | Crystal clear | Boat from Sandakan |
Honest Assessment
Sabah's beaches don't compare to the Maldives or Thailand's best islands for sheer Instagram perfection. But they offer something those places often don't: genuinely uncrowded stretches, excellent marine life just metres from shore, and a fraction of the tourist density.
The trade-off is that mainland beaches are modest, infrastructure is basic, and you need boats (and sometimes permits) to reach the best spots. Plan accordingly and you'll be rewarded.
Best Time for Beaches
| Season | West Coast | East Coast / Islands |
|---|---|---|
| March–October | Good conditions | Best season — calm seas, clear water |
| November–February | Some rain, still OK for sunsets | Rough seas — some islands inaccessible |
