Beaches

Last updated: March 2026

Sabah has plenty of coastline but not every beach is Instagram-worthy. The best sand and clearest water are on the islands. Mainland beaches are fine for sunsets and local atmosphere but manage your expectations for the water.

ℹ️ Real talk

If you're coming for pristine white sand beaches, head to the islands (TARP, Semporna, Mantanani). Mainland beaches are more about scenery, sunsets, and local vibes than crystal-clear water.

KK and West Coast

Beach Location Good For Water Clarity
Tanjung Aru BeachKK (10 min from centre)Sunsets, food stalls, local hangoutAverage
Nexus Karambunai30 min north of KKResort beach, long sandy stretchGood
Dalit BayShangri-La Rasa RiaResort beach, orangutan centre nearbyGood
Pantai KelambuKudatRemote, uncrowded, white sandGood

Tanjung Aru is where locals go for the sunset — it's a social experience more than a beach day. The food stalls along the beach are the real attraction. Don't swim here expecting crystal water.

Kalampunian BeachNear Tip of BorneoLong white sand, quietGood
Bavang Jamal BeachKudat areaSecluded, very few touristsGood

The Kudat/Tip of Borneo area has the best mainland beaches in Sabah. Worth the 2.5-hour drive from KK, ideally combined with an overnight stay.

💡 East coast strategy

On the east coast, skip the mainland beaches entirely and head straight to the islands. Semporna, Sandakan, and the Turtle Islands are where the magic is.

Island Beaches

The best beaches in Sabah are all on islands. Here are the highlights:

Honest Assessment

Sabah's beaches don't compare to the Maldives or Thailand's best islands for sheer Instagram perfection. But they offer something those places often don't: genuinely uncrowded stretches, excellent marine life just metres from shore, and a fraction of the tourist density.

The trade-off is that mainland beaches are modest, infrastructure is basic, and you need boats (and sometimes permits) to reach the best spots. Plan accordingly and you'll be rewarded.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is the best beach near Kota Kinabalu?
Tanjung Aru Beach is closest (10 min) but it's more for sunsets and local atmosphere than pristine swimming. For better water and sand nearby, try Nexus Karambunai (30 min north) or Dalit Bay at Shangri-La. For the actual best mainland beach, drive 2.5 hours north to Kalampunian Beach near Kudat.
Q Are Sabah's mainland beaches clean?
Maintenance varies. Tanjung Aru is busy and sometimes has litter. Resort beaches (Nexus, Dalit Bay) are kept tidy. The cleanest and most uncrowded mainland beaches are in the north (Kudat area) and require a drive. For consistently clean, pristine water, go to the islands instead — they have much stricter environmental rules.
Q Can you swim year-round in Sabah?
West coast (KK area) is swimmable year-round, though rainy November–February can be choppy. East coast and islands: March–October is best. November–February brings rough seas — many island operations shut down, and some islands become inaccessible. Water temperature is warm (26–28°C) year-round.
Q What are the rules on nudity or topless swimming?
Sabah is a Muslim-majority state. Topless and nude swimming are not culturally acceptable and may result in fines or legal issues. Wear proper swimwear (one-piece or board shorts) on all beaches. Some island resorts may be more relaxed privately, but public beaches have strict expectations.
Q What is the best sunset beach in Sabah?
Tanjung Aru Beach in KK is famous for sunsets and has food stalls. For a quieter, more scenic sunset, head to Tip of Borneo in Kudat — dramatic cliffs and excellent light. Island sunsets are equally stunning — Mantanani and TARP islands offer unobstructed western views.
