5-Day Wildlife Itinerary — Orangutans & Proboscis Monkeys

Last updated: March 2026

Borneo is one of the last places on Earth where you can see wild orangutans swinging through primary rainforest, proboscis monkeys leaping between riverbank trees, and pygmy elephants bathing in jungle rivers. Sabah's wildlife corridor — from Sepilok to Kinabatangan to Danum Valley — is the most accessible route to experience all of it. This 5-day itinerary is designed for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers who want maximum sightings with expert guides.

💡 Best season for wildlife

Dry season (March-October) is best. Animals come to riverbanks when water levels drop. Orangutan fruiting season: April-August. Birds peak during fig fruiting: August-September. Dawn (6-8am) and dusk (5-7pm) are golden hours for all sightings.

Day 1: Sepilok Orangutans & Sun Bears

Morning

  • 7:00 AM — Fly KK to Sandakan (45 minutes, MASwings). Transfer to Sepilok area (25 minutes).
  • 9:30 AMSepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. RM30 entry, camera RM10. Arrive 15 minutes before the 10am feeding. Position yourself at the viewing platform early for the best spot. Semi-wild orangutans swing down from the canopy to the feeding platform — juveniles are the most active and entertaining.
  • 10:30 AM — Walk the boardwalk trails through the lowland rainforest. Keep eyes on the canopy — wild orangutans move through this forest. The indoor nursery gallery shows baby orangutans learning to climb (air-conditioned viewing).

Afternoon

  • 11:30 AMBornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (next door, RM50 entry). Morning is when bears are most active — they play, forage, and climb. These are the world's smallest bears and they're endemic to Borneo. Allow 1 hour. Note: cameras with 500mm+ lenses require a RM1,000 photography permit.
  • 1:00 PM — Lunch in Sepilok area.
  • 2:30 PM — Optional: Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary (30 minutes from Sepilok, RM60 entry). Afternoon feeding at 2:30pm on Platform A. The big-nosed proboscis monkeys are unique to Borneo — the males have enormous pendulous noses and pot bellies. Best photography opportunity for proboscis monkeys anywhere.

Evening

  • 5:00 PM — Transfer toward Kinabatangan River (2-3 hours from Sandakan). Check into your river lodge. Most operators include dinner.

Day 2: Kinabatangan River (Dawn)

Morning

  • 5:30 AMDawn river cruise (2-2.5 hours). This is prime wildlife time. Proboscis monkeys come to the riverbanks for their morning feeding. Hornbills (Sabah has all 8 Borneo species) fly across the river. Macaques forage in the trees. Your guide knows the best spots from daily monitoring.
  • 8:00 AM — Breakfast at lodge.
  • 9:30 AMJungle trek with guide. Look for orangutans in the canopy (listen for branch-cracking sounds), wild orchids, pitcher plants, and insects. The forest floor has leaf litter with camouflaged frogs and spiders — macro photography heaven.

Afternoon

  • 12:00 PM — Lunch and rest at lodge. Heat of the day — wildlife rests too.
  • 3:00 PMAfternoon river cruise (2-2.5 hours). Different wildlife from the morning. Look for pygmy elephants at river bends (best chance during dry season). Monitor lizards on the banks. Crocodile eyes just above the waterline. The light at 5-7pm is perfect for photography.

Evening

  • 7:30 PM — Optional: Night cruise or night walk. Spot sleeping kingfishers, owls, slow lorises, and nocturnal insects. Fireflies light up the riverbanks like fairy lights — one of Kinabatangan's most magical experiences. Headlamp required.

Day 3: Kinabatangan River (Deep)

Morning

  • 5:30 AM — Second dawn cruise. Different route from yesterday. Longer stays dramatically increase sighting odds — pygmy elephant encounters, orangutan nests in the canopy, and rare bird species like Storm's stork and Bornean bristlehead.
  • 8:30 AM — Breakfast.
  • 9:30 AM — Visit an oxbow lake if accessible. These cut-off river loops are biodiversity hotspots. Look for kingfishers (6 species along Kinabatangan), herons, and water monitors.

Afternoon

  • 12:00 PM — Lunch and rest. Review and backup photos. This is a good time to discuss wildlife sightings with your guide and plan evening strategy.
  • 3:00 PMFinal afternoon cruise. Focus on any species you haven't photographed yet. Your guide will target specific areas based on recent sightings from other boats.
  • 5:30 PM — Watch the sunset over the river. Golden light on the water with hornbills silhouetted against the sky.

Evening

  • 7:00 PM — Dinner and early night. Transfer to Danum Valley tomorrow (or fly from Sandakan to Lahad Datu).

Day 4: Danum Valley

ℹ️ About Danum Valley

Danum Valley is 130 million years of undisturbed primary rainforest — one of the most complex ecosystems on Earth. Borneo Rainforest Lodge (NatGeo Unique Lodge) has 30 private chalets, an infinity pool, and expert naturalist guides. 4D3N packages from MYR3,925-5,485 per person. Budget option: Danum Valley Field Centre (basic, no hot water, electricity off 11pm-7am).

Morning

  • 6:00 AMDawn jungle walk with naturalist guide. Danum's primary forest is taller and denser than Kinabatangan. Listen for gibbons calling (one of Borneo's most atmospheric sounds). Look up for red leaf monkeys, flying squirrels (gliding at dawn), and hornbills.
  • 9:00 AM — Breakfast. The lodge terrace overlooks the river — sometimes wildlife comes to you.
  • 10:00 AMCanopy walkway (if available at your lodge) or guided trek to a waterfall. The forest interior is dim — ISO 1600+ is standard for photography here.

Afternoon

  • 12:00 PM — Lunch and rest at lodge. Infinity pool if at Borneo Rainforest Lodge.
  • 3:00 PMAfternoon trek. Focused on specific wildlife targets: tarsiers (tiny nocturnal primates), flying lizards, and the incredible insect life. Macro photographers will be in heaven — the variety of beetles, spiders, and fungi is staggering.

Evening

  • 7:00 PMNight drive (RM160 with guide). Danum's nocturnal wildlife includes Sunda colugo (flying lemur), civets, slow lorises, Malay civet cats, and — if lucky — the legendary Sunda clouded leopard. Use a red-filtered headlamp to minimize disturbance.

Day 5: Return & KK Departure

Morning

  • 6:00 AM — Final dawn walk or bird watching from the lodge.
  • 8:00 AM — Breakfast and checkout.
  • 9:00 AM — Transfer to Lahad Datu or Sandakan airport. Flight back to KK (1 hour).

Afternoon

  • 2:00 PM — Arrive KK. Connect to international flight or spend a final afternoon at the waterfront, reviewing 5 days of incredible wildlife encounters.

⚠️ Flash and drones

NEVER use flash on wildlife — it causes stress, temporary blindness, and disrupts natural behavior. Drones are prohibited in all Sabah Parks without special permission. CAAM drone permits cost RM250 and require 14+ working days to process. Camera drones need additional JUPEM approval. Leave the drone at home and focus on your camera.

Practical Tips

⚠️ Leeches

Jungle leeches are common in Danum Valley and Kinabatangan during wet weather. They are harmless but annoying. Wear leech socks or gaiters, tuck pants into socks, and apply DEET or tobacco water to exposed areas. If bitten, do not pull — apply salt or let it finish. The bite bleeds freely but stops on its own.

Lodge Booking

  • Kinabatangan budget — Community homestays from RM120/person for 3D2N. Book through operators in Sandakan.
  • Kinabatangan mid-range — Sukau Rainforest Lodge (NatGeo partnership), RM140-150/person per night.
  • Danum Valley — Borneo Rainforest Lodge (4D3N MYR3,925-5,485). Book 2-3 months ahead. Field Centre is budget option (basic but genuine).
  • Guides — Full-day guide at Danum: RM200. Night drive: RM160. Worth every ringgit for wildlife knowledge.

Variations

Budget Version (3 Days, No Danum)

Day 1: Sepilok. Days 2-3: Kinabatangan budget tour. Skip Danum and save RM3,000+. You still see orangutans, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and potentially elephants. Total: RM1,200-2,000.

Bird Watcher Special (7 Days)

Add 2 days at Kinabalu Park (300+ bird species, 17 Borneo endemics, RM50 foreigner entry) and Crocker Range (Endemic Bird Area). Sabah has 600+ bird species including all 8 Borneo hornbill species visible along the Kinabatangan at Sukau. Hire a birding guide for best results.

Photography Expedition (10 Days)

Extend Kinabatangan to 4 nights (more chances for elephants). Add Tabin Wildlife Reserve (4D3N ~RM2,800-3,500, dawn drives RM100/person) and Deramakot Forest Reserve (best for night safaris, 7 hours daily drive time). Professional guided tours: Adventure Alternative Borneo from GBP7,195 for 6 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Will I definitely see orangutans?
At Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre (feeding at 10am and 3pm), your chances are 90%+. Wild orangutans along the Kinabatangan River are less guaranteed but commonly spotted, especially during fruiting season (Apr-Aug). At Danum Valley, sightings are possible but less frequent — this is a wilder, more pristine habitat.
Q What camera gear do I need?
The most versatile lens for Sabah wildlife is a 70-200mm f/2.8. Rainforest light is dim — you need f/2.8 aperture and willingness to shoot at ISO 1600-6400. For birds and distant wildlife: 100-400mm (on APS-C = 160-640mm effective). A tripod is essential for macro and low-light. NEVER use flash on wildlife.
Q Is Danum Valley worth the cost?
Borneo Rainforest Lodge at Danum Valley costs MYR3,925-5,485 for 4D3N per person — expensive but genuinely unique. It is a NatGeo Unique Lodge of the World, set in 130-million-year-old primary rainforest. The wildlife density and pristine forest are unmatched anywhere else accessible in Borneo. For serious naturalists and photographers, it is worth every ringgit.
Q Can I use a drone for wildlife photography?
Drones are heavily restricted. CAAM permit costs RM250/drone (under 20kg), valid 3 months, and requires applying 14+ working days before your flight. Camera drones need additional JUPEM approval. Drones are PROHIBITED in all Sabah Parks without special permission. In practice, drone photography of wildlife disturbs animals and is discouraged even where technically allowed.
Q When is the best season for wildlife?
Dry season (March-October) is best overall. Animals congregate at riverbanks when water levels drop. Orangutan fruiting season peaks April-August. Bird activity peaks during fig fruiting (August-September). Dawn (6-8am) and dusk (5-7pm) are the golden hours for all wildlife sightings.
Q Is the Kinabatangan River safe?
Yes, the river is safe for tourists when guided. Crocodiles are present but guides know safe areas. Night cruises are standard and safe with experienced operators. Mosquitoes are the bigger concern — bring strong repellent (DEET-based). The eastern Sabah security advisory applies to some coastal areas, not the Kinabatangan region specifically.
Q How fit do I need to be?
Moderate fitness is sufficient. River cruises require no exertion. Jungle treks at Danum Valley are 2-4 hours on hilly terrain with some steep sections. Sepilok boardwalks are flat and easy. The main challenge is heat and humidity — drink lots of water and pace yourself.
Q Can I see pygmy elephants?
Borneo pygmy elephants are best seen along the Kinabatangan River, particularly during dry season (Mar-Oct) when they come to the riverbanks. Sightings are not guaranteed — they move in herds and can be in different areas each day. A 3-night Kinabatangan stay significantly improves your chances. Tabin Wildlife Reserve and Deramakot are alternative spots.
