4-Day Diving Itinerary — Sipadan & Mabul

Last updated: March 2026

Sipadan is consistently ranked among the top 5 dive sites in the world. The barracuda tornado, walls of sea turtles, and reef shark patrols make it a bucket-list destination for every diver. But Sabah's diving goes far beyond Sipadan — from the macro paradise of Mabul to the accessible reefs of KK's islands. This 4-day itinerary gets you from warm-up dives to Sipadan and back, whether you're a certified diver or starting from scratch.

Overview

4-Day Dive Itinerary Overview
DayLocationDives
Day 1KK — TARP warm-up2 dives (or snorkel)
Day 2Fly to Semporna — Mabul area2-3 dives
Day 3Sipadan2-3 dives (permit day)
Day 4Mabul macro + departure2 dives + depart
⚠️ Sipadan permit required

Sipadan requires a permit (MYR450/day, allows 2 dives) with a daily cap of 176 divers. Advanced Open Water minimum since October 2022. Book 6 months ahead during peak season (Mar-May, Aug-Sep). Your dive operator allocates permits — longer stays (3-5 nights) improve your chances. November is CLOSED for marine restoration.

Day 1: KK Warm-Up Dive

Morning

  • 8:00 AM — Meet your dive operator at Jesselton Point or their shop in KK. TARP (Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park) is just 15-20 minutes by boat from KK — one of the most accessible dive sites in Borneo.
  • 9:00 AMFirst dive: Sapi Island reef. Max depth 12-18m. Good coral coverage, clownfish, nudibranchs, blue-spotted stingrays. Perfect warm-up after travel. 2-dive package: USD76 (MYR340), 3-dive: USD88 (MYR395). Includes lunch, equipment, and park fees.

Afternoon

  • 11:30 AM — Surface interval. Lunch on the island. Check your gear, adjust weights.
  • 1:00 PMSecond dive: Manukan wall or TARP wreck sites. The 25 dive sites in TARP include wreck diving options and coral walls. Look for seahorses, mantis shrimp, and reef octopus.
  • 3:00 PM — Return to KK. Rest and prepare for early morning flight tomorrow.

Evening

  • 6:00 PM — Sunset from the waterfront. Light dinner — avoid heavy meals before dive days.
  • 8:00 PM — Early night. You're flying to Tawau tomorrow morning.

Day 2: Semporna & First Dives

Morning

  • 6:00 AM — Fly KK to Tawau (1 hour, MASwings or AirAsia). Your dive operator arranges pickup from Tawau airport.
  • 8:30 AM — Transfer to Semporna (1 hour drive), then boat to your dive resort on Mabul Island or stay in Semporna town.
  • 10:00 AMCheck dive: Mabul house reef. Mabul is the world capital of macro diving. Garden eels, flamboyant cuttlefish, blue-ringed octopus, mandarinfish (look for them at dusk in the rubble zone). Max depth 15-20m.

Afternoon

  • 2:00 PMSecond dive: Kapalai sandbar or Mabul Paradise reef. Kapalai is a shallow sandbar with exceptional macro — pygmy seahorses, ghost pipefish, leaf scorpionfish. The artificial reef structures attract incredible diversity.
  • 4:00 PM — Surface interval. Rest, review photos, prepare cameras for tomorrow.

Evening

  • 5:30 PM — Optional: Mabul dusk dive to see mandarinfish mating display (5:30-6pm, one of the ocean's most beautiful spectacles). MYR60 extra for night dive.
  • 7:00 PM — Dinner at resort. Briefing for Sipadan tomorrow. Early night.

Day 3: Sipadan

🚨 This is the big one

Sipadan is a 600-meter deep oceanic island — one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth. Respect the site: no gloves, no touching coral, maintain neutral buoyancy, follow your guide's signals. Current can be strong at some sites — carry a surface marker buoy and reef hook.

Morning

  • 6:00 AM — Early boat to Sipadan (30-45 minutes from Mabul). The permit day starts early.
  • 7:00 AMFirst dive: Barracuda Point. The signature dive — a wall dive where massive schools of chevron barracuda form tornado-like vortexes. Strong currents are common; use your reef hook if needed. Also: grey reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish schools, and green turtles cruising the wall.
  • 9:30 AM — Surface interval on the island. Sipadan has a small beach and ranger station. No overnight stays allowed.

Afternoon

  • 10:30 AMSecond dive: South Point or Turtle Cavern (viewing only). South Point: whitetip sharks resting on ledges, eagle rays, giant trevally. At Turtle Cavern, you can see the entrance to the underwater cave (penetration dives require special certification). Expect 20+ turtle sightings per dive.
  • 1:00 PMThird dive (if permit allows): Drop Off. The wall starts at 1 meter and drops to 600+ meters. Pelagic fish, sharks, and the occasional hammerhead. One of the most dramatic underwater landscapes anywhere.
  • 3:00 PM — Return to Mabul. Decompress, review the day's footage, and celebrate with fellow divers.

Day 4: Mabul Macro & Departure

Morning

  • 7:00 AMFinal dive: Mabul Lobster Wall or Frog Fish Point. One last macro session to round out the trip. Look for frogfish, skeleton shrimp, harlequin shrimp, and the many critters hiding in the sand and rubble.
  • 9:30 AMSecond dive: House reef farewell. Relax and enjoy the easy diving. Take your time photographing the residents.
  • 11:00 AM — Surface, pack up, final photos.

Afternoon

  • 12:00 PM — Boat back to Semporna, then transfer to Tawau airport.
  • 3:00 PM — Fly Tawau to KK (1 hour). Connect to your international flight or stay in KK for one more night.

Practical Tips

⚠️ No-fly rule

Do not fly within 18-24 hours of your last dive (decompression sickness risk). Plan your dive schedule so your last dive is at least 24 hours before your flight. This itinerary accounts for this with morning dives on Day 4 and an afternoon flight.

💡 Choosing an operator

Scuba Junkie (PADI 5-Star, max 4 divers/guide, DAN insurance included) and Bigfin Divers (PADI 5-Star, beach resort + water bungalow) are the most recommended. Seaventures Dive Rig offers a unique experience — sleeping on a decommissioned oil rig with unlimited house reef diving (4D3N MYR4,293 + Sipadan).

Safety

  • Insurance — DAN (Divers Alert Network) insurance is essential. Some operators include it; buy your own if not.
  • Decompression chambers — Semporna: 089-785101. Labuan: 012-4010598. KK: 088-251326.
  • Surface marker buoy — Carry one at Sipadan. Currents can separate you from the group.
  • Hydration — Drink plenty of water between dives. Dehydration increases decompression risk.

Variations

Snorkeling Only (No Certification)

Replace dives with snorkeling. TARP from KK (Day 1, MYR105+), Mabul snorkeling day trip (MYR180 including transfers, lunch, 2 sessions). Sipadan snorkeling day trip available on Tuesdays and Fridays (USD205/person). You can still see turtles, coral, and reef fish from the surface.

Get Certified First (6-Day Version)

Add 2 days at the start for PADI Advanced Open Water (MYR1,150+). Do the certification at Mabul — you'll be diving the actual sites as part of your training dives. Then proceed with Days 2-4 as above.

Liveaboard Deep Dive (5+ Days)

Seaventures 5D4N with Sipadan (MYR5,265/person) gives you unlimited house reef diving plus boat dives to Sipadan, Mabul, and Kapalai. The oil rig platform has a unique social atmosphere among divers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Do I need Advanced Open Water for Sipadan?
Yes. Since October 2022, Sipadan requires a minimum Advanced Open Water certification. If you only have Open Water, you can upgrade with most Semporna dive operators — PADI Advanced Open Water costs MYR1,150+ and takes 2 days (5 knowledge sessions + 5 adventure dives). You must be 15+ years old.
Q How do Sipadan permits work?
Sipadan allows 176 permits per day (some sources say up to 254). Each permit costs MYR450 and allows 2 dives. Permits are allocated to dive operators who distribute them to guests. Book 6 months ahead during peak season. A 50% deposit is required at booking, full payment 2 weeks before. Staying 3-5 nights with a Semporna operator improves your chances of getting a permit.
Q Is November a good time to dive in Sabah?
No. Sipadan closes every November for marine restoration. The northeast monsoon (Nov-Feb) also brings reduced visibility and rougher seas around Semporna. The best diving months are March to May (20-30m visibility) and August to September.
Q What marine life will I see at Sipadan?
Sipadan is famous for: large schools of barracuda forming tornado-like formations (best seen on morning dives, most active Mar-May and Jul-Aug), green and hawksbill sea turtles (20+ per dive, year-round), whitetip and grey reef sharks, bumphead parrotfish schools, and the famous Barracuda Point wall dive. It is consistently ranked among the top 5 dive sites in the world.
Q Can I just snorkel instead of dive?
Yes. Snorkeling day trips from Semporna to the surrounding islands cost RM80-150. TARP islands in KK are the best accessible snorkeling (from MYR40 equipment only, guided MYR105+). Mabul snorkeling day trips cost MYR180 including transfers, lunch, 2 sessions, and equipment. You can see turtles, coral, and colorful reef fish without diving.
Q Which dive operator should I choose?
Scuba Junkie: PADI 5-Star, max 4 divers per guide, Mabul Beach Resort, DAN insurance included. Bigfin Divers: PADI 5-Star, beach resort and water bungalow options. Seaventures Dive Rig: Unique decommissioned oil rig hotel with unlimited house reef and boat dives. All three are well-established and safety-conscious.
Q Is diving in Sabah safe?
Yes, with standard precautions. All reputable operators follow PADI safety standards. Decompression chambers are available in Semporna (089-785101), Labuan (012-4010598), and KK (088-251326). DAN (Divers Alert Network) insurance is strongly recommended and included by some operators. Always do a safety check and follow your dive computer.
Q How do I get to Semporna?
Fly to Tawau airport (1 hour from KK on MASwings or AirAsia), then 1-hour transfer to Semporna. Most dive operators arrange airport pickup. Alternatively, bus from KK to Semporna takes 9-10 hours (not recommended). Book flights early for best prices.
