Sabah is warm year-round (28–33°C). The driest months are March–September. Rain is possible any time, so pack a light rain jacket regardless of season.

Day 1: Kota Kinabalu

Morning

  • 8:00 AM — If it's Sunday, head straight to Gaya Street Sunday Market. Walk the full length, try local snacks, browse handicrafts.
  • 9:30 AM — Breakfast at a kopitiam on Gaya Street. Try ngiu chap or laksa.
  • 10:30 AM — Walk to the KK Waterfront. Visit the Filipino Market for souvenirs and pearls.

Afternoon

  • 12:30 PM — Lunch at Sedco Complex or the Night Market area for Malay food.
  • 2:00 PM — Visit Signal Hill Observatory for city views (short 10-minute walk up). Or visit the Sabah State Museum if you prefer air conditioning.
  • 3:30 PM — Explore Imago Mall or walk around the Waterfront Esplanade.

Evening

  • 5:30 PM — Head to the Waterfront for one of Sabah's famous sunsets. The sky turns orange-pink over the South China Sea.
  • 7:00 PM — Dinner at the KK Night Market. Grilled seafood, satay, BBQ chicken wings. Walk the full stretch.

Day 2: Mount Kinabalu & Kundasang

ℹ️ Note

This is a day trip to view Mount Kinabalu and explore the area — not a summit climb. Climbing the summit requires 2 days, advance booking, and a guide.

Morning

  • 7:00 AM — Depart KK by car or tour van. The drive to Kinabalu Park takes about 2 hours via the Kota Kinabalu–Ranau highway.
  • 9:00 AM — Arrive at Kinabalu Park HQ. Walk the botanical garden trail (1 hour loop). Spot pitcher plants, orchids, and mountain flora.
  • 10:30 AM — Drive to Kundasang (15 minutes from the park). Stop at a viewpoint for photos of the mountain.

Afternoon

  • 11:30 AM — Visit Desa Dairy Farm (if open) or browse the Kundasang market for highland vegetables and strawberries.
  • 12:30 PM — Lunch at a local restaurant. Try the freshwater fish or the hearty mountain-style soups.
  • 2:00 PM — Optional: Poring Hot Springs (30 min from Kundasang). Natural sulphur hot springs and a canopy walk.
  • 4:00 PM — Head back to KK. Stop at Nabalu village market on the way down for local handicrafts.

Evening

  • 6:30 PM — Back in KK. Dinner at a Damai/Luyang kopitiam for Chinese hawker food, or try a Kadazan restaurant in Penampang.

Islands & Departure

Morning

  • 8:00 AM — Head to Jesselton Point jetty (city centre). Buy a boat ticket to one of the Tunku Abdul Rahman islands — Sapi or Manukan are the most popular.
  • 8:30 AM — 15-minute boat ride to the island. Spend the morning snorkelling, swimming, or just relaxing on the beach.
  • 12:00 PM — Boat back to Jesselton Point.

Afternoon

  • 12:30 PM — Final lunch in KK. Last-minute souvenir shopping at the Filipino Market or Suria Sabah Mall.
  • 2:30 PM — Head to airport for departure.
💡 Island tips

Bring your own snorkel gear if you have it — rental on the island is overpriced. Wear reef-safe sunscreen. The water is warmest between March and September.
