Ferry Schedules

Last updated: March 2026

Sabah doesn't have a ferry network like Peninsular Malaysia, but boats are essential for reaching islands and some coastal destinations. Here's every route you need to know.

⚠️ New jetty for TARP (March 2026)

The TARP island ferry terminal has relocated from Jesselton Point to South Jetty, behind Jesselton Quay. KK–Labuan ferries still depart from Jesselton Point.

General Tips

  • Book ahead: Peak season (June–August) boats sell out, especially Sipadan permits
  • Seasickness: Carry medication — seas are rougher October–March
  • Life jackets: Mandatory on all boats (should be provided)
  • Cash: Bring cash for smaller operators — not all accept cards
  • Weather cancellations: Common during monsoon. Keep your itinerary flexible
  • No plastic bags: Banned across all Sabah Parks from January 1, 2026

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Can I book ferries online?
For TARP islands and KK–Labuan ferries, you can book at the jetty counter on the day or through some tour operators. International routes (Labuan–Brunei) and private island tours should be booked in advance through operators. Peak season (June–August) may sell out, so advance booking is recommended.
Q Do ferries run during monsoon season?
Partially. October–March (monsoon), services may be delayed or cancelled due to rough seas. TARP island ferries are most affected. Check conditions before booking. Larger ferries (KK–Labuan) are more likely to operate, but expect delays and seasickness.
Q Can I take a ferry to Brunei from Sabah?
Yes. Ferry: Labuan → Muara (Brunei) takes ~2 hours, ~RM63. This is an international border crossing — passport required. Check Brunei visa requirements for your nationality before boarding.
Q Is seasickness a problem on Sabah ferries?
Yes, especially October–March during monsoon. Carry seasickness medication (ginger, tablets, patches, wristbands). Larger ferries (KK–Labuan) are more stable than island speedboats. Sit midship for less motion. Avoid eating heavy meals before boarding.
Q What are luggage limits on ferries?
Island speedboats: 1 small bag per person (dry bags provided for snorkeling trips). KK–Labuan ferries: larger luggage allowed, but no specific limit stated. Check with operators. Oversized or extra bags may incur fees.
Q How far in advance should I book Sipadan?
Sipadan permits are limited to 176 per day and must be booked months in advance (often 3–6 months) through dive operators. Not a walk-up ferry — entirely tour operator dependent. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
